May 14-22nd, 2026

May 14-22nd, 2026

Every year I put on "Eco-Tours" to some of the world's wildest locations.

This year, that trip is on the island of Madeira, Portugal.
This island has gorgeous beaches...👆
Incredible wildlife..👆
And some of the top rated hiking trails in all of Europe!👆

All of this natural wonder makes Madeira one of the ecotourism capitals of the world.

And while anytime of year is a good time to visit Madeira...

Each Spring, a very special natural event goes down that is a MUST-SEE for wilderness lovers.

The Spring Flower Bloom

Every year between March and May, the island of Madeira lights up with every color of the rainbow as flowers bloom all across the island.

It's so spectacular that the government of Madeira hosts a month long holiday to celebrate called "Spring Flower Festival".

You can think of it like a flower themed 4th of July parade that doesn't end for a whole month.

Here's The 8-Day Eco-Tour Trip Itinerary In Madeira

Day 1
Arrive At Your Villa In Madeira

When you arrive in Madeira, you'll be picked up from the airport and shuttled out to our ocean view villa for the duration of your stay.
This 10 bed luxury home will be your place to rest and recover after your flight and throughout the rest of the trip.

Day 2
Cable Car Ride To Madeira's Botanical Gardens

Our first day on Madeira will be spent taking a cable car ride up into the mountains to see Madeira's botanical gardens.
In May, these gardens will be FILLED to the brim with flowers of every variety.

This will offer you great photo opportunities, and the chance to learn about some of Madeira's native flora.

This will be a relatively slow day designed to help you recover from your long plane flight, but it will not be without some heart pumping excitement!

After our walk through the botanical gardens, you'll hop on a traditional downhill street toboggan to reach the parking lot.
For the rest of the day you'll have free time to explore the island on your own or rest at the villa.

Day 3
Road Trip To Fanal Forest And Natural Swimming Pools

We'll wake up early for our 3rd day in Madeira and hit the road to witness one of Madeira's most notable landmarks.

The Fanal Forest.
This relatively short hike has captured the attention of social media creators across the globe for it's misty, mysterious allure.

Characterized by thick moss, bubbling brooks, and thick fog, the Fanal Forest is a photographer's dream destination.

We will arrive before sunrise and host a photoshoot to ensure you go home with amazing pictures to remember your time in Madeira.

After sunrise, we'll head back down to the coast for a swim in the Porto Moniz Natural Swimming Pools.
This swimming pool connects directly to the Atlantic ocean and effortlessly blends into the ocean rock features around Madeira.

The pools temperature stays at about 70 degrees in Spring and offers a cool reprieve from the intense island sun of Madeira.

After a swim and lunch, we'll take the scenic route back across the island to our villa and prep for our next big adventure day.

Day 4
Sperm Whale Boat Tour!

On the morning of Day 4 we'll head down to the harbor and board an ecological catamaran tour.
There are countless animals we have the opportunity to see in the ocean around Madeira, but the biggest and most unique is undoubtably the sperm whale.
Reaching an average size between 50-60ft long, sperm whales are the largest toothed predator on the planet.

Most people know them for hunting giant squid thousands of feet under the sea... but it is lesser known that sperm whales are arguably the most intelligent animal on Earth with a more complex vocabulary and language than even humans.

But that's not all...

Their massive fluid filled head can produce vocalizations so loud they can literally stun fish via sonic waves!

These super-powered predators are some of the most interesting and least understood animals on the planet. And it will be our mission on day 4 to find them in the wild and (hopefully) bring some pictures home to remember it forever.

Day 5
Pico Do Arieiro Sunrise Hike

On day 5 we'll finally set out on one of the most highly rated hiking trails in all the world.

This is Pico Do Arieiro.
This hike will last between 3-5 hours across the mountain ridges of inner Madeira.

We'll wake up early, eat lunch on the mountain, and have lots of chances to get the perfect photo to sum up your time on Madeira.

And after a long day of hiking we'll head out for a group dinner at beautiful restaurant overlooking the ocean.

Day 6
Ponta de São Lourenço Hike

If you are sore from the day of hiking before, don't worry.

On our 6th day we'll sleep in, make breakfast, and head out in the afternoon for our final hike of the trip.
Ponta de São Lourenço is a 2.5ish mile chain of rocky outcrops that juts out off the Northeast corner of Madeira.

We will be going here to catch sunset.

There are great picture opportunities all along the trail (including from the parking lot). So no need to worry about how far you can or can't make it. This hike is just one final chance to enjoy the landscape of Madeira to the MAX before we leave.

Day 7
Free Day In Downtown Funchal

Your final full-day in Madeira is a free day to enjoy on your own.

I will being doing a drop off and pickup in downtown Funchal if you want to explore the city, or you can check out some of the hiking trails closer to the house.

Regardless, this is your day to see every part of Madeira you still want to see before the trip is over.

At the end of the day, we'll come back to house for one final dinner send off, and start packing to head back to the airport the next morning.

Day 8
Fly Home

I'll take a group trip back to the airport in the morning on our final day.

Meet your guide

I'M JAKE BLUE

I still remember coming home from my first day in 3rd grade and telling my mom...
"I feel like a caged fox at school."
😅

Now looking back, it's easy to see I was destined to end up becoming a travel guide.

My earliest memories are running away from my babysitter to go on solo hikes.

My first fascinations were deer, bears, and turkeys that wandered through my backyard.

And while my high school and college friends went to parties, I would spend my weekends hiking to mountain caves without a flashlight to "see how good my night vision was".

Then I Became A Hobo And Hitchhiked Across America In 2018.

From Charleston, South Carolina all the way up to Sandpoint, Idaho - I hitchhiked.

It was the hardest thing I'd ever done at that point in my life. But as hard as it was, it was worth it to see the country.

After wading through the chaos of the cities, avoiding crazy people, and getting lost on a cargo train in Alabama...

I found a few precious moments of wild wonder.

Out there on the road I got to see the Red Pine forests of Georgia...

The high alpine moss flats of Colorado...

And the geothermal geysers of Yellowstone.

That's when I knew I would spend the rest of my life searching for the BEST adventure destinations around the world.

Over the next few years I moved into my car...

Finished my 50 state tour of America ending in Delaware...
Bought a campervan and created my dream travel vehicle...
And eventually started my travel business called...

WanderBlue Adventure Co.

Through WanderBlue, I help people make their dream trips Easier, more Affordable, and more FUN than ever before with amazing adventures around the world.
